Melastoma malabatricum

The genus Melastoma (Family Melastomataceae)consists of at least two species, namely Melastoma malabatricum (purple melastoma) and Melastoma decemfidum (white melastoma). The shrubby plants grow in bushes and are common to Southeast Asia countries. Both the purple and white melastoma have been used in traditional medicine for treatments of cuts and boils. Scientific studies have shown that some compounds extracted from the plants possess antibacterial activities.
