The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Light

The presence of light gives brightness to a space and the contents within the space. "Physical light" brighten the physical space, but the spiritual space needs to be brightened by the "spiritual light". Seek the spiritual light to brighten our spiritual space.

Al-Quran,  Chapter 24, An-Nuur:35

"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things." (MySurah Translation)

"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things."  (Sahih International Translation)

"God is the light of the heavens and the earth. His light may be compared to a niche containing a lamp; the lamp within a glass, the glass like a radiant tar; lit from a blessed tree – an olive tree that is neither of the east nor of the west. Its very oil would almost give light even though no fire had ouched it. Light upon light! God guides to His light him that wills [to be guided]. God propounds parables for all people, since God alone has full knowledge of all things." (In The Shade of Al-Quran Translation)

Maryam or Mary in the Quran

During the month of Ramadhan Muslims are encouraged to read the Quran. Many would strive to read all the 30 juzuk (parts) in the 29 or 30 day of the fasting month. Many of these readers have to commit to one-day- one- juzuk schedule or programme . In this way they can finish reading the whole Al-Quran by the end of the Ramadhan month, insya Allah (by will of Allah).

As this is the night of 16th or 17th of Ramadhan many of them have already finished reading the 16th part of the Quran. In this part, the Surah 19 (Chapter 19), which is named Maryam (Mary) is found.  The account on Maryam can be found mainly in two chapters, which are Chapters 3 (ali Imran) dan Chapter 19 (Maryam).

In this post I try to arrange the verses from the different Chapters as close as possible to the actual sequence of events or dialogs that actually happens. I seek Allah forgiveness on the mistakes that I have done in doing so. The following are the translation according to three translators. Regarding translation of the Quran, one must be aware that:

"ANY translation (interpretation) of the Qur'aan will most definitely contain errors. In its natural language (Arabic), the Qur'aan is the direct Word of Allah (God) to mankind through the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Any translation of the Qur'aan no longer retains that 'official' and perfect status, however it can be tremendously helpful to beginning students wanting to learn more about Islam."

This reminder can be found in the Muslim Access Website

Note: The translation in MySurah is essentially that of Yusof Ali

Birth of Maryam (Mary)

Chapter 3 Ali Imran :33

Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of 'Imran over the worlds (Sahih International Translation)

Allah did choose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of 'Imran above all people,- (MySurah Translation)

Allah chose Adam, Nuh (Noah), the family of Ibrahim and the family of `Imran above the nations (Tafsir Ibnu Kathir)

Chapter 3 Ali Imran :34

Descendants, some of them from others. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing. (Sahih International Translation)

Offspring, one of the other: And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. (MySurah Translation)

They were the offspring of one another. God hears all and knows all.. (The Shade of Al Quran Translation)

Offspring, one of the other, and Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.(Tafsir Ibnu Kathir)

Chapter 3 Ali Imran 3:35

[Mention, O Muhammad], when the wife of 'Imran said, "My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing." (Sahih International Translation)

Behold! a woman of 'Imran said: "O my Lord! I do dedicate unto Thee what is in my womb for Thy special service: So accept this of me: For Thou hearest and knowest all things." (MySurah Translation)

`Imrān’s wife said: “My Lord, I vow to You that which is in my womb, to be devoted to Your
service. Accept it from me. You alone are the One Who hears all and knows all.” (In The Shade of Al Quran)

(Remember) when the wife of `Imran said: "O my Lord! I have vowed to You what is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services, so accept this from me. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knowing.'' (Tafsir Ibnu Kathir)

Chapter 3 Ali Imran :36

But when she delivered her, she said, "My Lord, I have delivered a female." And Allah was most knowing of what she delivered, "And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allah ]." (Sahih International Translation)

When she was delivered, she said: "O my Lord! Behold! I am delivered of a female child!"- and Allah knew best what she brought forth- "And no wise is the male Like the female. I have named her Mary, and I commend her and her offspring to Thy protection from the Evil One, the Rejected." (MySurah Translation)

When she had given birth she said: “My Lord, I have given birth to a female.” — God well knew to what she would give birth. — “The male is not like the female. I have named her Mary and I seek Your protection for her and her offspring against Satan, the accursed.” (In The Shade of Al Quran Translation)

Then when she gave birth to her, she said: "O my Lord! I have given birth to a female child, ـ and Allah knew better what she bore, ـ "And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam, and I seek refuge with You for her and for her offspring from Shaytan, the outcast.''  (Tafsir Ibnu Kathir)

Chapter 3 Ali Imran :37

So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allah . Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account." (Sahih International Translation)

Right graciously did her Lord accept her: He made her grow in purity and beauty: To the care of Zakariya was she assigned. Every time that he entered (Her) chamber to see her, He found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Mary! Whence (comes) this to you?" She said: "From Allah. for Allah Provides sustenance to whom He pleases without measure." (MySurah Translation)

Her Lord graciously accepted her. He made her grow up a goodly child, and placed her in the care of Zachariah. Whenever Zachariah visited her in the sanctuary he found her provided with food. He would say: “Mary, where has this come to you from?” She would answer: “It is from God. God gives sustenance to whom He wills, beyond all reckoning.” (In The Shade of Al Quran Translation)

So her Lord (Allah) accepted her with goodly acceptance. He made her grow in a good manner and put her under the care of Zakariyya. Every time he entered the Mihrab to (visit) her, he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Maryam! From where have you gotten this'' She said, "This is from Allah.'' Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit (Tafsir Ibnu Kathir)

"O Maryam! Submit yourself with obedience (Aqnuti) to your Lord and prostrate yourself, and bow down along with Ar-Raki`in.'(Tafsir Ibnu Kathir)

Note: Prostrating and bowing form part of Muslims' prayer.

Chapter 3 Ali Imran : 44

This is part of the tidings of the things unseen, which We reveal unto thee (O Messenger.) by inspiration: Thou wast not with them when they cast lots with arrows, as to which of them should be charged with the care of Mary: Nor wast thou with them when they disputed (the point). (MySurah Translation)

This is an account of something which remained beyond the reach of your perception We now reveal to you. You were not present with them when they cast lots as to which of them should have charge of Mary; nor were you present when they contended about it with one another. (In The Shade of Al Quran)

Forgiveness of Sins

In Islamic teaching, human being are continuously, whether knowingly or unknowingly and purposely or otherwise, committing sins towards Allah and also towards His creations. Sins can be of two categories, which are minor sins and major sins. Minor sins can be forgiven (erased) through performing good deeds plus seeking forgiveness. Repentant may be optional but highly encouraged. However, forgiveness from major sins can only be forgiven through repentant followed by doing good deeds. Seeking forgiveness should be done as quickly as they are commited.

Surah Ali Imran 3:133

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous (Sahih International)

Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth, prepared for the righteous,- (my surah)

Surah Ali Imran 3:134

Who spend [in the cause of Allah ] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good; (Sahih International)

Those who spend (free will), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men;- for Allah loves those who do good;- (my surah)

Ali Imran 3:135

And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah ? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.(Sahih International)

And those who, having done something to be ashamed of, or wronged their own souls, earnestly bring Allah to mind, and ask for forgiveness for their sins,- and who can forgive sins except Allah.- and are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done. (my surah)

Surah Ali Imran 3:136

Those - their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.(Sahih International)

For such the reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath,- an eternal dwelling: How excellent a recompense for those who work (and strive)! (my surah)

Forgiveness can only be given by Allah. No human being can forgive sins committed towards Allah. Allah does not commission any one to stand in for Him, for forgiveness solely belongs to Allah (see Ali Imran 3:135 above) . Sins committed through inflicting losses, injuries, ect upon other human being need forgiveness by the victims before Allah can grant forgiveness. Thus, this from of sins is more difficult to deal with. To make oneself free from this trouble, one must restrain oneself from inlicting any form of trouble towards fellow human being and his belongings.

Allah is most forgiving. He offers forgiveness for the sins of those servants who seek forgiveness.  The hadith (Prophet's Tradition) below clearly support this statement :

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) said, "Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: "Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?" (HR Al-Bukhari)

Why wait till tomorrow?  Open your heart to seeking forgiveness and repentant, for it had been documented that the Prophet (PBUH) himself did so more than seventy times a day:

Aghar ibn Yassar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say, "Oh people, repent to Allah, for indeed, I repent to Allah 100 times every day" (HR Muslim)

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard Messenger of Allah (PBUM) saying: "By Allah, I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day. [HR Al-Bukhari]

Throughout the month of Ramadhan, the Muslims are urged to do good deeds and to ask for forgiveness. Good deeds are rewarded in multiple amounts compared to other months. Repentant and seeking forgiveness are more likely to be accepted during Ramadhan than the rest of the year.

Surah Al-Qasas 28:83

"Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have better than it; and whoever comes with an evil deed - then those who did evil deeds will not be recompensed except [as much as] what they used to do"  (Sahih International)

"If any does good, the reward to him is better than his deed; but if any does evil, the doers of evil are only punished (to the extent) of their deeds." (My Surah)

Allah is Most Benevolent that the multiplication of reward granted in the month of Ramadhan is on top of the multiplication of reward already granted during the rest of the year (insya Allah). This reward is stated in this hadith of the Prophet's SAW:

"Narrated Abu Huraira (RA): Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said: "If any one of you improve (follows strictly) his Islamic religion then his good deeds will be rewarded ten times to seven hundred times for each good deed and a bad deed will be recorded as it is."" [HR Al-Bukhari)

Prophet Yusha

The grave of Prophet Yusha AHS is unusual, because it is very long. The Quran does not reveal much about him.

Death (2)

Today is the the last day of the month of Shaaban and tomorrow, Insya Allah (Allah permits), will be first day of fasting in Malaysia. Therefore, I would like to extend my salam Ramadhan Al-Mubarak to all Muslims all over the world. Muslims who are fit (in term of shariyah) are obligated to fast the whole of the month of Ramadhan.  May Allah grant you taqwa, which is the aim of the Ramadhan fasting.  I have read and heard that, many non-Muslims are trying to experience fasting as well. May Allah bless you.

Readers,

I now would like to continue the discussion on death. To be frank I had thought that the discussion on this topic is a short one-posting type. However, when I start on it I find that there are much information and thoughts that I would like to share.

To know what comes out of someone who have died, it is easier to begin with what has/have entered the featus's  body before it is born. There is no medical information on this topic, except the physical developments that result in fully developed human that can move, even within the womb.  When (at what age) does the featus start moving and what makes the fetus move, whereas before that it was motionless?

For Muslims, the answer should be seeked within the pages of the Quran and  the hadith (traditions) of Prophet Muhammad. The information gathered is as follows:

The physical development within the womb :

(All References are From Sahih International)

From Chapter 23 - Al-Mukminun:

23:13 - Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging.

23:14  - Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah , the best of creators.

23:15 -Then indeed, after that you are to die.

From Surah 40 - Ghafir

40:67 - It is He who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you out as a child; then [He develops you] that you reach your [time of] maturity, then [further] that you become elders. And among you is he who is taken in death before [that], so that you reach a specified term; and perhaps you will use reason.

In addition to physical development there is another process that happens to the featus which is described as fallows:

Chaper 32 - As-Sajdah

32:7 - (He is) Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay.

32:8 - Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained.

32:9 - Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul (Arabic = roh) and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.

The same happened to Adam who wan directly from clay  (without father and mother) and Prophet Jesus who was born without a father:

From Chapter 38 - Sad (On the creation of Prophet Adam PBUH)

38:71 - (So mention) when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay.

38:72  - So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul (roh), then fall down to him in prostration."

From Chapter 66 - At-Tahrim (On the creation of Prophet Jesus PBUH)

66:12 And [the example of] Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.

In the Quran, it is not stated precisely when the  roh enters the featus's body.  Luckily, a hadith from Prophet Muhammad PBUH gives the answer, which is 120 days.

"Verily, each one of you is formed in his mother's womb forty days as a drop, then he is something suspended for a similar period, then he is a piece of flesh like a chewed piece of meat for another period of forty days, then the angel is sent to insert the roh (spirit/soul)....." (Hadith narrated Muslim).

Hence,  there is something that is called roh (spirit/soul) that is breathed or blown into the featus or completed Prophet Adam's body before they are able to function. Thus, roh is the factor that make human being alive.

Thus, roh is the one that is taken out of the body when one dies.Once the roh is taken out all of the body functions ceased to from performing their designated activities.

Death

Death is defined as the cessation of all vital functions of the body including the heartbeat, brain activity (including the brain stem), and breathing (a definition from the Free Dictionary).

In the Wikipedia, death is defined as the permanent cessation of all biological functions that sustain a living organism. Phenomena which commonly bring about death include biological aging (senescence), predation, malnutrition, disease, suicide, murder and accidents or trauma resulting in terminal injury.

The definition of death (from Merriam-Webster dictionary) is "the irreversible cessation of all vital functions especially as indicated by permanent stoppage of the heart, respiration, and brain activity, that is the end of life.

All living things will die. Different types and different species of living things have different expected lifespans. Plants generally fall into either annuals or perennials, the former has about one year lifespan while the latter can live up to few hundred years.  Likewise, animals also vary in their lifespans, but not too diverse. Cats and dogs may live up to ten years but some animals may live for about a year to a hundred years. In man life expectancy of sixty to seventy five years is common.

Man will die at the time and placed already predetermined before they are born, but nobody knows the time and place of death except the Creator.

“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.” (Ali Imran 3: 185)

And when the time of death comes, it will not be delayed nor be extended even for a fraction of a second.   Death cannot be avoided even if one locks oneself in a room with walls and doors that cannot be broken or penetrated.  Death will come even if one hides oneself in faraway or remote lands where no one lives.

“To every people is a term appointed: when their term is reached, not an hour can they cause delay, nor (an hour) can they advance (it in anticipation)” (Al-A’araaf 7 :34)

“Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction …….” (Sahih International An-Nisa’ 4:78)

It has been narrated by many mouths that during the time of Prophet Suleiman AHS, there was a man who was healthy and well. There was no sign of death on him. He was attending a feast given by the Prophet.  While this man was eating, he realised that a man was continuously gazing at him.  Meanwhile, Prophet Suleiman was also aware of the presence of this stranger. So, he approached him and asked who he was. The stranger replied to him that he was actually the Archangel Azrael who had come to take away the soul of the man he was watching.  However, the Archangel was wondering why the man was many kilometers away from the spot where he was supposed to die, while the time of death was only some minutes away.

Getting curious the man being watched got up and went to ask the Prophet the reason why the suspicious looking man was watching him intently.  The Prophet quickly gave the answer,  “He is the Archangel Azrael, the Angel of Death, who had cone to take your soul away”. The man shivered, fell to his knees and sweat profusely.   He begged Prophet Suleiman to sent him to a faraway land so that he could escape from the Archangel.  Prophet Suleiman sent him away on the flying carpet to a faraway land.  When the flying carpet landed he was feeling relieved because he thought that he had gotten away from death. He was smiling as he was stepping out from the flying carpet. To his surprise when he lifted his face, he saw the Archangel of Death was right in front of him. The place and the time of death was exactly the same as the instruction received by Archangel from Allah, the Creator.
To all wrongdoers who are afraid of death and take all measures to avoid it, the Archangel of Death says to them, “This is what you have been avoiding.”  Allah said this verse in the Al-Quran. As follows:

“And the stupor of death will come in truth: "This is what you have been avoiding!" (Qaf 50:19)

Now, there is a definite line that separates life and death. The question is what has changed at the line, that is  when a split second before a person was alive and a split second afterword  he was deadIs there any  entity that is missing in the motionless body as compared to the same body a split second before?  If there is, what exactly the entity is? If this entity has come out of the body, thereby rendering the body dead, where has it gone?

Lots of questions to ask. Till the next post, let us ponder about it.
