Amazing Feats of Birds

Three amazing feats of birds are described in the Al-Quran. These feats are glorification of their Creator, communication using specific languages, and the facility of flight, staying afloat and gliding. Tafseer or expanded explanation of the various verses, insya Allah (God willing), will be posted later on.

Birds glorify Allah

Surah An-Nuur 24:41

Seest thou not that it is Allah Whose praises all beings in the heavens and on earth do celebrate, and the birds (of the air) with wings outspread? Each one knows its own (mode of) prayer and praise. And Allah knows well all that they do. (Yusof Ali's Translation)

Are you not aware that it is God whose limitless glory all creatures that are in the heavens and earth extol, even the birds as they spread out their wings? Each of them knows how to pray to Him and to glorify Him; and God has full knowledge of  all that they do. (In The Shades of Al-Quran)

Do you not see that Allah is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him], and Allah is Knowing of what they do. (Sahih International)

Surah Saba' 34:10

We bestowed Grace aforetime on David from ourselves: "O ye Mountains! Sing ye back the Praises of Allah with him! and ye birds (also)! And We made the iron soft for him;- (Yusof Ali's Translation)

We graced David with Our favour. We said: “You mountains, sing with him God’s praises! And likewise you birds!” We caused iron to become soft for him, (In The Shades of Al-Quran)

And We certainly gave David from Us bounty. [We said], "O mountains, repeat [Our] praises with him, and the birds [as well]." And We made pliable for him iron, (Sahih International)

Birds Communicate Using Their Own Langguages

Surah An-Naml 27:16

And Solomon was David's heir. He said: "O ye people! We have been taught the speech of birds, and on us has been bestowed (a little) of all things: this is indeed Grace manifest (from Allah.)" (Yusof Ali's Translation)

Solomon inherited David. He said: ‘O people! We have been taught the speech of birds, and have been given of all good things. This is indeed a manifest favour [from God].’ (In The Shades of Al-Quran)

And Solomon inherited David. He said, "O people, we have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given from all things. Indeed, this is evident bounty." (Sahih International)

What makes birds afloat in the air?

Surah Al-Nahl 16:79

Do they not look at the birds, held poised in the midst of (the air and) the sky? Nothing holds them up but the power of) Allah. Verily in this are signs for those who believe. (Yusof Ali's Translation)

Do they not see the birds and how they are enabled to fly in mid-air? None but God holds them aloft. In this here are signs for people who will believe. (In The Shades of Al-Quran)

Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe. (Sahih International)

Surah Al-Mulk 67:19

Do they not observe the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them in? None can uphold them except ((Allah)) Most Gracious: Truly ((Allah)) Most Gracious: Truly it is He that watches over all things. (Yusof Ali's Translation)

Do they not see the birds above them, spreading their wings and drawing them in? None but the Lord of Grace holds them up. He sees everything (In The Shades of Al-Quran)

Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing.(Sahih International)
