Cerbera odollam


Cerbera odollam is a perennial plant from the plant Family: Apocynaceae. The Fruit is rounded and looks like an apple. Common names include sea apple tree and pong-pong.  The plant is native to south-east Asia and South Asia.

Tradescantia zebrina is a small creeping herbaceous plant from the plant Family Commelinaceae. It can be grown easily in pots or on the soils. It can grow very well in wet areas such as the drain.

Strelitzia nicolai



Strelitzia nicola is a monocotyledonous plant of the plant Family Strelitziaceae. The leaves are similarly arranged like those of Ravenala madagascariensis, but the traditional fan-look is less obvious.  But, unlike the Ravenala sp. this plant often bear flowers that resemble bird of paradise flowers of  Heliconia.  Hence, the plant is commonly called the giant bird of paradise.

Ravenala madagascariensis

Ravenala madagascariensis is a monocotyledonous plant of the plant Family Strelitziaceae. The leaves are similar to banana  ( Musa spp ; Family: Musaceae), but arranged differently. The leaves of  Ravenala plant are characteristically arranged to look like a traditional fan of the east Asia. This give a nick name pisang kipas, which means fan-shaped banana plant.  Both Families are in the Order Zingiberales.

The plant used to be a popular landscape plant, but has lost its appeal to other plants, which can produce flowers in abundant.

Tabebuia rosea


Tabebuia rosea is an evergreen tree from the plant  Family Bignoniaceae.  It is commonly known as trumpet tree.  The flowers are trumpet-shaped and purplish pink in colour.  Trees with white flowers are given the name Tabebuia roseo-alba.





In most parts of Malaysia flowering is not as profuse as in the northern states of Kedah and Perlis, where the plants can be completely covered by flowers. Tabernaemontana

Tabernaemontana divaricata is an evergreen shrub from the plant Family Apocynaceae. It is commonly known as pinwheel jasmine or crepe jasmine. Some people mistaken this plant as bunga kaca piring in Malay. However bunga kaca piring refers to Gardenia jasminoides.

Cassia fistula

Cassia fistula  (Family : Fabaceae) is a good plant to have in recreational areas. When flowering it can give a good atmosphere to the surrounding. Like some other Fabaceae plants, the flowers are borne on a long raceme that stoops downwards for one to two feet.  Check previous posting for more information.

The plant can be easily grown from seeds, which are produced in abundance.  After sowing for 7-10 days seedlings can be obtained.

Beaucarnea recurvata

Beaucarnea recurvata is an evergreen pant from the Plant Family Asparagaceae. The plant is characterised by the presence of bulb at the base of the stem.  Its common names are ponytail palm and elephant-foot tree. It can be planted in the pot, and when it has grown taller can be transferred to the soil.

Acrostichum aureum

Acrostichum aureum is a species of fern from the plant Family Pteridaceae (and Subfamily Ceratopteridoideae). This plant grows in mangrove areas towards the inland. It can tolerate salinity. The young leaves are reddish  but grow to green mature leaves. Common names include swamp fern and mangrove fern. Locally it is known as piai raya and piai laut.

Lagerstroemia floribunda


Lagerstroemia floribunda  is a woody perennial plant of the plant Family  Lythraceae. The plant is native to Malaysia and Thailand. The flower is reddish pink and conspicuous from a distant.  The flower has six petals in a corolla.  The flower remains on the plant longer than most other plant. This feature is desirable for landscape which requires brighter atmosphere. In drier season especially in the nothern parts of the country, where the dry season is normally longer, the flowers are more abundant.

Petrea volubilis

Petrea volubilis is an evergreen woody plant of the plant Family Verbenaceae. The woody stem often thin and support is needed to sustain upright growth. The leaves may be slightly ruffles and the surface is rough to the touch. The star-shaped flowers are blue or purplish blue in colour.  Each flower has five longer and narrower sepals and fine darker petals. The petals fall down much earlier than the sepals, which can persist for much longer time.

If can form good growth on the side of fences or buildings. It can also be grown besides a pergola.  Most of the plant body can occupy the top of the pergola. Branches can hang down the perimeter. At flowering time it can from a magnificent scenery.   The flowers extend down as long racemes carrying clusters of individual purple flowers just like Wisteria.






The plant may be propagated by cutting. The plant in the pictures have grown up to three meters but after few years it started to die (Top). When examined the roots were infected. The plant was uprooted and the roots were cleaned, and then treated with fungicide. The plant was cut into pieces and then vegetatively propagated. The stump of the original plant (above, left) and some cuttings grew into into healthy plants.
